Next week the children will be focusing on their transition to Year 2 and completing their passports to Year 2 – telling their new teacher all about themselves, their qualities, their favourite topics and what they are looking forward to and might be worried about.
The children are also excited about their class parties on Monday. Please don’t forget to sign up on the food contribution lists for these, which are outside each classroom.
There will be lots of class, year group and whole school celebrations next week as we will be enjoying various assemblies.
Don’t forget that term ends at the normal time of 3.10pm on Tuesday 23rd July.
Finally, the Year 1 team would like to thank all parents and carers for your support throughout the year. We are immensely proud of all of our pupils and we hope that you are too. We wish you all a happy and healthy summer holiday and we will see you in September.
Next week in Topic the children will be reminiscing and completing a recount, writing about their favourite memory from their trip to Littlehampton. They will also be delving into poetry in more depth, hearing and learning poems about nature, performing them and then contributing to a whole class poem about the seaside. At the end of the week, they will be working in pairs to write their own senses poem about the seaside (inspired by their trip to the beach!)
Next week in Maths the children will begin learning about time. They will start with months of the year, days of the week and important times of their day and later in the week this will progress to learning how to tell the time to o’clock and half past.
There is also our book fair starting next week and running from Friday 12th until Wednesday 17th July after school in the KS1 and KS2 playgrounds.
In Topic next week we will be working different elements of the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children will be contributing to a class opening for the story and then moving on to a whole class character description of the villain/giant and finally the children will be writing their own character descriptions, based on the villain/mythical creature they designed last week. There are lots of other exciting activities going on in Topic next week, including sculpting and painting plant pots, learning about healthy lifestyles and designing and making a healthy smoothie. Please don’t forget to give £1 to your child’s class teacher to contribute towards the cost of the smoothie ingredients.
In Maths next week the children will be continuing to consolidate and embed their learning on division by sharing. They will be using practical objects to do this and focusing on using sentence stems to describe what they have done e.g. “12 coins shared between 4 purses = 3” and later in the week they will be recording this.
Please also don’t forget that it is Sports Day at Croydon Arena on Monday 24th June. We hope to see as many parents and carers there as possible, cheering on the children. It looks set to be a fantastic day!
Finally we also have our fantastic Friends of Kingsley Summer Fair on Friday 28th June and we look forward to seeing you all there to support the school and our brilliant PTA.
In Topic next week the children will be designing a villain/mythical creature character, similar to the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk. They will create and label their character and generate vocabulary to describe them then use this to inform their writing in a few weeks time. They will also be learning about Vincent Van Gogh, exploring his techniques and creating their own versions of his sunflowers painting.
In Maths next week the children will be completing assessments and will be practising lots of mental maths, with a focus on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Towards the end of the week the children will be be introduced to division by sharing. Please practise these at home too!
Next week we also have a very exciting French Day taking place on Wednesday 19th June. The children will be sharing a french story, singing and counting in French. Please don’t forget that it is also a mufti day and the children have been asked to wear the french colours of red, white and blue.
Finally due to a server upgrade, our blog may go offline from Friday evening but should be back online on Sunday.
Next week in Topic the children will be concentrating on their new text ‘Jack and the Beanstalk.’ They will be sequencing the story, adding actions to it to aid with retell with a story map and acting out and freeze framing parts of the story. Towards the end of the week, they will be deepening their understanding of the characters in the story, focusing on Jack and the giant, in preparation for a character description the following week.
In Maths the children will be continuing with grouping using arrays. Arrays are an arrangement of objects or pictures in rows or columns. Later in the week, they will be moving on to division by grouping. In mental maths they will carry on practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, so please continue to practice these with them at home. There are lots of songs on YouTube about counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and the splat square website is also useful!
The children will return to school on Tuesday 4th June, after an inset day.
Our new Topic is Blooming Marvellous and we have lots of exciting activities related to growing planned! In the first week, the children will be receiving an exciting parcel and may have to do some planting! They will be finding out what plants need to grow, making predictions and writing a letter.
In Maths the children will be completing their money topic by consolidating everything they have learnt and will then move on to grouping and multiplication.
There will also be a big focus on Phonics during the first few weeks of Summer 2, as we have our Phonics screening in week 2.
